Office Productivity Software

Office productivity, or an office productivity suite, is the software that people use the most after e-mail. Office productivity software typically contains a word processor, a spreadsheet, presentation graphics, and a simple and easy-to-use database. Almost everyone is familiar with Microsoft Office, or Lotus SmartSuite, which are two examples of office productivity suites.

Office productivity software like Microsoft Office is typically very expensive. Microsoft Office costs almost $400 for a new copy, and almost $300 for an upgrade. That is a lot of money, especially when there is an excellent free alternative.

OpenOffice Suite

The OpenOffice Suite is open source software that provides similar functionality to Microsoft Office for free. OpenOffice is a suite of six applications, that include:

  1. Writer - a word processor (like Microsoft Word)
  2. Impress - a presentation graphics package (like Microsoft PowerPoint)
  3. Math - a mathematical equation editor
  4. Draw - a graphics package
  5. Calc - a spreadsheet (like Microsoft Excel or Lotus 1-2-3)
  6. Base - a database package (like Microsoft Access)

OpenOffice is a full-function office suite with all of the features that a user would expect. It can also read and write Microsoft Office files. In addition, OpenOffice can save files in the open document format (ODF), as PDF files, or save presentations as Macromedia Flash files.
